If your friend is like me, he used a butcher knife long. Buy a knife that is easy for him to want to keep and use. I would recommend a 10 "knife instead of 8 as usual." A steak knife and a bread knife. NOT butcher knife steak grooves that can be sharpened. You can also use a sharpening steel. It is not necessary for all other knives in the block.
